Ellis Bonoff Kohs was an American composer and music theorist who lived from May 12, 1916, to May 17, 2000. In addition to his work as a composer, Kohs also wrote several music theory textbooks. He was known for his orchestral works, particularly his Symphony No. 1, which marked an important stage in his evolution as a composer.
Kohs was also a respected music educator, teaching at Wesleyan University, College of the Pacific, and the University of Southern California. At USC, he served as a composer in residence from 1965 to 1967. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Ellis Bonoff Kohs Award for Orchestral Excellence.
Kohs' style as a composer was known for its curious tension and drama , and he often employed unconventional harmonies and complex rhythms in his works. Some of his notable pieces include his Chamber Concerto for Viola and String Nonet and his works for choir and organ.
