Elfrida Andrée was a Swedish composer, pianist, and organist, born on February 19, 1841, in Visby, Gotland, Sweden. She was one of the first female organists and composers in her country and was an important figure in the development of classical music in Scandinavia.
Andrée began her musical studies at a young age, and in 1860 she moved to Stockholm to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music. There, she became the first woman in Sweden to receive a degree in organ performance. After completing her studies, she worked as a church organist and became the first woman to hold such a position in Sweden.
As a composer, Andrée wrote more than 50 works for various ensembles and solo instruments. Her music is characterized by its romantic and dramatic style, and many of her compositions were influenced by the works of Frédéric Chopin and Richard Wagner. Some of her most popular works include the Piano Concerto in E minor, the Symphony in A minor, and the opera Fritiof and Ingeborg.
In addition to her work as a composer and organist, Andrée was also a prominent advocate for women's rights and worked tirelessly to promote gender equality in the performing arts. She founded the Women's Society for the Advancement of Music in Sweden, which served as a platform for women to showcase their musical talents.
