Short bio Edwin Lemare
Full biography Edwin Lemare
Edwin Henry Lemare was an English organist and composer who lived in the latter part of his life in the United States. Born on September 9, 1865, Lemare was considered the greatest performer and one of the most important composers of the late Romantic English-American organ school. He enjoyed worldwide fame as a virtuoso in the early 20th century and was particularly known for his transcription works and virtuosity in improvisation.
Lemare was a prolific composer who wrote original works and transcriptions for the organ. His compositions were influenced by his British roots and the Romantic style of music. He wrote numerous transcriptions of orchestral music for the organ, including selections from Wagner's operas and Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No.1. His transcription of Grieg's work is considered to be one of his most famous and most often played transcriptions.
In addition to his transcription works, Lemare also wrote a number of original works for the organ, which showcased his command of the instrument and his ability to create lush, Romantic-style music. Some of his most famous pieces include his Sonata in G Major, his Symphony No. 1 in D Major, and his Fantasia and Fugue on the Chorale "Ad Nos, Ad Salutarem Undam".
Lemare's legacy in the music world continues to this day, and his transcription works, which were created for the purpose of showcasing the capabilities of the pipe organ, remain some of the most frequently played works for the instrument.
