Short bio Edmund Rubbra
Full biography Edmund Rubbra
Edmund Rubbra (23 May 1901 - 14 February 1986) was a British composer known for his instrumental and vocal works , including symphonies, chamber music, choral works, and songs. He studied music at the University of Oxford and later with Gustav Holst. Rubbra's music was essentially conservative, with emphasis on long, melodic lines and generous use of sequences, canons, and counterpoint.
Rubbra's career spanned several decades, with his first major success in the 1930s with the composition of his First Symphony. He went on to compose a total of 11 symphonies, each of which bears a unique expressive character showcasing his musical style and imagination.
Rubbra was also active as a music educator and writer, publishing several books on music. His interest in music education was also reflected in his compositional output, with works ranging from beginner's piano pieces to complex orchestral works.
Despite being an active composer during the era of twelve-tone music, Rubbra chose not to write in this idiom himself. He was rather attracted to the music of composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, and also showed admiration towards Shostakovich.
Rubbra's music continues to be performed and recorded, with efforts being made to bring greater attention to his work as a significant British symphonist.
