Short bio Edgar Bainton
Full biography Edgar Bainton
Edgar Bainton (14 February 1880 – 8 December 1956) was a British-born composer , later an Australian-resident composer best known for his choral works, including anthems, hymns, and services as well as symphonic works, chamber music and operas. He was born in London and began his music education at the age of seven. His talent for music was soon evident; he went on to study at the Royal College of Music, London before taking up appointments as a church organist and choirmaster, serving at various churches in London.
Bainton's compositions drew inspiration from his travels throughout Europe and his experiences serving as an ambulance driver during World War I. He often blended religious texts and themes with romantic harmonies, creating music that was both spiritual and emotionally charged. Although he was a prolific composer, his works were often overlooked during his lifetime.
Bainton's most famous works include the choral anthem "And I Saw a New Heaven," the opera "The Daughter of Jephthah," and a setting of the Magnificat. His works have been performed by many leading orchestras and choirs, and his music has been recorded by a number of major labels.
Despite his relative lack of recognition, Bainton was highly regarded as a teacher, mentoring several notable composers including Lennox Berkeley, who went on to have a successful career of his own. Bainton himself lived a rather humble life, dedicating himself to music and his family. He died in 1956 and is remembered today as one of the leading composers of his time.
