Dudley Buck (March 10 , 1839 - October 6, 1909) was an American composer, organist, and music writer. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and became a prominent figure in American music in the late 19th century. Dudley Buck began his professional career as an organist and choir director , but he later shifted his focus to composition. He was the first American to write an organ sonata.
Buck's work was notable for its complexity and technical skill , as well as its incorporation of American patriotic themes. One of his most famous compositions is the Festival Overture on the American National Air "Star Spangled Banner," which remains a popular patriotic piece in America. His style was heavily influenced by German Romantic music, and he studied under noted German composers such as Johann Schneider and Julius Otto.
In addition to his work as a composer, Buck was also a writer on music and published several books on the subject. He was an important figure in American choral music, and his choral compositions were widely performed during his lifetime. His hymn tunes and church music remains popular to this day.
