Donald Eugene Gillis (June 17 ), 1912 – January 10, 1978) was a prolific American composer, conductor, teacher, and radio producer ). He wrote music in a variety of styles ranging from symphonies and operas to jazz and popular songs. Gillis was also a committed educator and spent much of his career teaching music and mentoring young composers.

One of Gillis' most well-known works is the composition "5 1/2: A Symphony for Fun," which was premiered by Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra in 1947. In addition to his classical compositions, Gillis was also known for his arrangements of popular songs, as well as his work in jazz.

Gillis served as the musical director for several radio programs, including "The Lone Ranger" and "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon," and also produced educational programs for radio and television. He was a strong advocate for public broadcasting and believed strongly in the role of music education in society.

Gillis spent much of his career teaching at universities and conservatories, including Texas Christian University and the University of Michigan. Many of his students went on to become successful composers and performers in their own right.
