Short bio Diomedes Cato
Full biography Diomedes Cato
Diomedes Cato was an Italian composer born around 1570 in Caltagirone, Sicily. He is known to have been active in Rome between 1601 and 1618. Cato was famous for his work as a composer of madrigals, which were popular in the sixteenth century.
Many of his madrigals were published in collections like "Il secondo libro de madrigali a cinque voci" (1604), "Il secondo libro de madrigali a quattro voci" (1615), and "Il terzo libro de madrigali a cinque voci" (1620). His collections mainly feature genre-based and traditional songs.
Cato was also known for his secular works for the viola da gamba, which is an instrument that was prominent during his time. His compositions included solo and vocal works, most notably "Libro de intavolatura di liuto et di chitarrone" (1612).
Even though many of his works were later forgotten and have not survived the test of time, Cato was still considered one of the more prominent Italian composers of his time.
