Short bio Dieter Schnebel
Full biography Dieter Schnebel
Dieter Schnebel was a German composer born on March 14, 1930, in Lahr, Germany. He was noted for his experimentation with sound and performance art, which became the basis of his unique compositions.
As a young man, Schnebel studied theology, philosophy, and music, and became fascinated with the potential for the human voice as an instrument. This fascination would become the foundation of his later work. He also studied with some of the leading composers of his day, including Gustav Havemann and Boris Blacher.
Schnebel's career spanned more than five decades and he was widely regarded as one of the most original voices in contemporary music. He was known for his avant-garde approach, using unorthodox instruments such as rubber bands and saw blades to create new sounds.
One of Schnebel's most famous works is "Maulwerke," (1969-1974) an experimental project that explores the limits of speech and the human voice. In this work, Schnebel deconstructs language and the musical notation system to create a unique, free-flowing composition.
He was also known for his collaborations with other artists, including painter Gerhard Richter and dancer/choreographer Pina Bausch. Schnebel's compositions were often performed alongside these artists' works, creating a multidisciplinary experience for audiences.
Dieter Schnebel passed away on May 20, 2018, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking music that has influenced generations of composers. His uncompromising approach to sound and performance continues to inspire musicians and artists around the world.
