David Vaughan Thomas was a Welsh musician and composer born in Ystalyfera, Glamorgan in 1873. Throughout his life, he wrote a considerable amount of music, including anthems, songs, and part songs with Welsh and English lyrics, as well as a significant body of instrumental work. Despite now being relatively little performed, Thomas has been described as "the leading native Welsh musician of , Oxford, where he was a pupil of Hubert Parry. He went on to study composition under Charles Villiers Stanford in London. After completing his studies in 1899, Thomas became a music teacher and conductor in South Wales. He was a prolific composer throughout his life, and his works were often performed in Welsh churches and chapels.

In addition to his musical activities, Thomas was involved in the cultural life of Wales and wrote articles and reviews for various Welsh newspapers and periodicals. He was also a member of the Gorsedd of Bards, a society dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Welsh language, literature, and culture.
