David Del Tredici is an American composer who was born on March 16, 1937, in California. He is known for his innovative and expressive works, which blend elements of surrealism and nostalgia. Del Tredici has won numerous awards for his contributions to the world of music, including the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1980 for his work "In Memory of a Summer Day."
Del Tredici's music often draws on literary and cultural sources for inspiration, and he has created a large body of work based on the writings of Lewis Carroll, including his hour-long setting of "Final Alice" for high soprano and large orchestra , which was premiered in 1976. He has also written music based on the poetry of James Joyce, Allen Ginsberg, and Walt Whitman, among others.
In addition to his work as a composer, Del Tredici has also been a dedicated teacher, sharing his knowledge and expertise with students at numerous institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Juilliard School.
