David Borden (born December 25 , 1938) is an American composer known for his work in the field of minimalist music. He was educated at the Eastman School of Music and Harvard University. Borden is considered an important figure in the development of electronic music, particularly as a member of the pioneering synthesizer ensemble Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company.
Borden is known for his use of synthesized sounds , which he has been incorporating into his compositions since the early 1970s. His compositions often feature slow-moving harmonies and repeating patterns, which is a hallmark of minimalist music. Solo and chamber works for keyboard, synthesizer, and other electronic instruments are some of his notable compositions.
Borden founded the Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company in 1969 , which is considered the first synthesizer ensemble in North America. The group was named after a rubber duck and was composed of synthesizers, keyboards, and other electronic instruments. The group performed extensively throughout the 1970s and released several albums.
