Cornelius Gurlitt was a German composer born on February 10, 1820, and passed away on June 17, 1901. He was a classmate of Carl Reinecke, whose father was the head of the Leipzig Conservatory where Gurlitt studied. Gurlitt wrote music with an educational bent and was dedicated to using music as a means of educating people, rather than just entertaining them.

Gurlitt composed a wide range of music including piano pieces, songs, and chamber music. He is perhaps best known for his pedagogical works, particularly his "Album for the Young" Op. 140, which is a collection of 25 pieces intended for young pianists. Gurlitt composed many of his pieces for teaching purposes, focusing on technical exercises, and lyrical melodies suitable for beginner and intermediate pianists.

Gurlitt's music is reminiscent of Schumann's style , and his compositions often include Baroque-inspired harmonic progressions in addition to Romantic harmonies. He wrote many pieces designed for the development of technique and aimed to help students perfect their musical skills.

Aside from his compositions, Cornelius Gurlitt is also known for his infamous collection of artwork that was discovered in his apartment in Munich in 2012. This collection contained over 1,200 pieces of art, including many that were believed to have been looted by the Nazis during the Second World War.

Overall, Cornelius Gurlitt was a significant composer of his time who dedicated his compositions towards the educational benefit of music students. His works still make frequent appearances in music pedagogy, and his influence on German classical music will not be forgotten.
