Cornelius Canis (also known as de Hondt or d'Hondt) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance era. He was born sometime between 1500 and 1510, and died on 15 February 1562. Canis is known for his sacred music compositions, particularly masses and motets, and he was one of the music directors for Charles V from 1540-1550.
Canis was active during a time when Franco-Flemish composers were highly regarded across Europe for their innovative polyphonic techniques. He is best known for his eight-part motet "Osculetur me," which was included in the 1568 publication Selectissimae cantiones. Other notable works by Canis include his five-voice "Salve Regina," and his four-part "Il estoit une fillette."
