Claude Champagne was a Canadian composer born in Montreal on May 27, 1891. He is known for his contributions to Canadian classical music scene, and is considered by many to be the father of Canadian music.
Champagne studied piano and theory with Orpha Deveaux and Romain-Octave Pelletier in Montreal , and later studied composition with Alexis Contant in Paris. Throughout his career, he composed a wide range of works including operas, symphonies, chamber music, and solo pieces.
Some of his famous works include the Suite canadienne, Symphonie gaspsienne, and Altitude. He was also an original member of the Canadian Grenadier Guards Band, and wrote the Ballade des lutins for the band in 1914.
In addition to his work as a composer, Champagne was also a teacher, and trained primary school teachers in solfege. He wrote five solfege teaching manuals during his career.
Champagne died in Montreal on December 21, 1965, leaving behind a legacy of classical music that continues to inspire and influence Canadian composers today.
