Chaya Arbel was a Ukrainian-born Israeli composer, known for her contributions to the field of classical music in Israel. She was born on November 26, 1931, in the Ukrainian city of Vinnitsa. Her parents were both amateur musicians who recognized Chaya's talent for music at an early age.

In 1940, Arbel and her family moved to Israel, settling in Tel Aviv. There, she began formal music studies with the composer Paul Ben Haim, a prominent figure in Israeli music. After completing her studies, Arbel began her career as a composer, writing works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments.

Arbel's music is characterized by a unique blend of traditional Jewish melodies and Western classical music. Her compositions often drew upon Jewish religious themes and folklore, using them to create works that were both deeply meaningful and musically innovative.

Throughout her career, Arbel received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to Israeli music. In 1981, she was awarded the Israel Prize for music, the country's highest civilian honor. She also served as the head of the composition department at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, where she mentored many young composers.

Arbel continued to compose music until her death on April 18, 2009, in Tel Aviv. Her legacy lives on through her music, which continues to be performed and celebrated in Israel's classical music scene.
