Short bio Charles Mingus
Full biography Charles Mingus
Charles Mingus Jr. was an American jazz musician, composer, pianist, and bandleader. Born on April 22, 1922, in Nogales, Arizona, he grew up in Watts, Los Angeles, and was heavily influenced by the local jazz scene. His father, Charles Mingus Sr., was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, and his mother, Harriet Moody, was of mixed ethnicity.
Mingus began playing the bass at age 16 and quickly gained a reputation as a prodigious talent. He formed his first band in the late 1940s and played with a number of other prominent jazz musicians, including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington.
Mingus was known for his innovative compositions and his willingness to experiment with different styles of music. He was one of the few jazz musicians of his time to incorporate classical music elements into his work, and he wrote a number of compositions for large ensembles that incorporated elements of classical music.
Mingus was also known for his social activism and his outspoken advocacy for civil rights. He used his music to make political statements and was unafraid to speak out on controversial issues.
In addition to his musical career, Mingus was also a published author, with a number of books to his credit. He died on January 5, 1979, in Cuernavaca, Mexico, at the age of 56, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential and innovative jazz composers of all time.
