Charles Lloyd Barnhouse was an American composer known for his work in the field of military music. He was born on January 4, 1888, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and began his career as a cornet player in the United States Marine Band. Later, he was appointed as the leader of the United States Navy Band , a position that he held for more than two decades.
During his tenure as the leader of the United States Navy Band , Barnhouse composed many marches and other musical pieces that became popular among military bands and are still performed today. One of his most famous works is "Thunder and Blazes," which is also known as the "Entry of the Gladiators" and is often associated with circuses.
Aside from his work as a composer, Barnhouse also played a key role in the development of military music education. He founded the Navy School of Music in 1935, which provided training for musicians who would serve in military bands. In recognition of his contributions to the field of music, Barnhouse was inducted into the Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 1981.
Barnhouse passed away on September 8, 1951, in Alexandria, Virginia. Despite his relatively short life, his music has had a lasting impact on the world of military music, and he is remembered as one of the most important composers in the field.
