Charles H. Gabriel (1856-1932) was a renowned composer of gospel songs and hymns. He was born in Wilton, Iowa and served in the Presbyterian church. Gabriel is said to have written and composed between 7,000 and 8,000 songs during his career , making him one of the most prolific gospel songwriters of his time.

Among his most popular compositions are "Send the Light, the Blessed Gospel Light," "O That Will Be Glory for Me," "I Stand Amazed in the Presence (My Saviour's Love)," and "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." The latter was written in collaboration with hymnwriter Civilla D. Martin, who wrote the lyrics after being inspired by a conversation with a bedridden Christian friend who said , "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." Gabriel set Martin's lyrics to music and the song has since become a beloved classic in the Christian hymn canon.

Gabriel's contributions to gospel music were recognized during his lifetime and he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1982. He continues to be remembered and celebrated as one of the greatest gospel composers of all time.
