He received his general education at the University of Edinburgh and studied composition and orchestration under Charles Villiers Stanford and Frederick Corder at the Royal College of Music in London.

Forsyth is best known for his works on music , including his Viola Concerto and his books Music and Nationalism and Orchestration, which became a standard reference work for composers and arrangers. His writing on music covered a diverse range of topics, including music history, criticism, and analysis. Forsyth's Music and Nationalism was a study and plea for English opera , while Orchestration focused on how to successfully write for various musical instruments.

Apart from being a composer and writer, he was also a music educator and had a successful teaching career, which included positions at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Juilliard School.
