Composer Jacques Arcadelt, also known as Jacob Arcadelt, Carpentras was born in the town of Carpentras, which is situated near Avignon, in the south of France, in 1505. He became a choirboy in the cathedral of that town and later studied music at the cathedral of Avignon.

Carpentras was an important composer of sacred music in the Renaissance era. He was a prolific composer and his works are known for their intricate harmonies and musical structure. His music was greatly influenced by the renowned Flemish composer Josquin des Prez, as well as by the Italian madrigal style.

Carpentras spent most of his career in the Papal court at Avignon, where he was appointed as a singer in the chapel choir in 1528. He later rose through the ranks and was eventually named Maître de Chapelle, or Master of the Chapel, in 1544. In this role, he was responsible for composing music for the liturgical services of the court, and he produced a large body of work in this capacity.

One of Carpentras's most significant works is his six-voice setting of Psalm 137, Super flumina Babylonis. His Nymphes des bois is considered to be one of the first madrigals to be composed in French. Carpentras also wrote several motets, hymns, and other sacred music.

Carpentras was known for his skill in blending different vocal parts, and his works often feature complex polyphony and rich harmonies. His music was highly regarded during his lifetime and continued to be influential in the later Renaissance and Baroque periods.
