Short bio Carl Heinrich Biber
Full biography Carl Heinrich Biber
Carl Heinrich Biber was an Austrian composer born in 1681, son of the famous composer and violinist Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber. Not much is known about his life and career, but it is believed that he followed in his father's footsteps and worked as a musician in Salzburg.
As a composer, Carl Heinrich Biber wrote exclusively for the church. His compositions include sacred music such as masses, oratorios, and motets, that were performed in Salzburg and other cities in Austria. He also wrote instrumental music, including sonatas for violin and continuo.
Biber's music is in the Baroque style, characterized by complex polyphony, ornate melodic lines, and elaborate harmonies. His works feature the use of scordatura, a technique where the open strings of the violin are tuned differently than usual, creating new sonorities and textures. This technique was also used by his father and was a distinguishing feature of the Biber family's music.
While Carl Heinrich Biber's output was not as extensive as his father's, his compositions are still appreciated for their technical and musical qualities. Some of his works have been recorded and performed by modern Baroque ensembles.
