Carl Gilbert Hardebeck (1869-1945) was a remarkable musician , composer, and teacher of music who is best known for his collections and arrangements of traditional Irish songs. Despite being blind from birth, Hardebeck's musical abilities and achievements were truly remarkable.

Born on December 10, 1869, in Clerkenwell, London, Hardebeck was the son of a German-born violinist and a pianist mother from Cavan, Ireland. At an early age, he showed an innate musical talent, and by the age of six, he was already playing the piano and violin at the same time. He went on to study at the Royal School for the Blind in Worcester, where he honed his skills as a musician and composer.

Hardebeck's lifelong passion was collecting and arranging traditional Irish songs. He traveled extensively throughout Ireland during his lifetime, collecting and transcribing folk tunes from various regions of the country. He also composed many original pieces, including marches, waltzes, and variations on traditional melodies.

Despite his blindness, Hardebeck was a skilled piano player and often gave concerts and performed in public. He was an accomplished organist as well, and from 1907 to 1924, he held the position of organist and choirmaster at St. Agnes' Catholic Church in Crumlin, Dublin.

After retiring from St. Agnes' Church, Hardebeck became a lecturer on Irish music, teaching at the Municipal School of Music in Dublin. He passed away on February 4, 1945, in Dublin, but his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be played and appreciated today.
