Born August 7th, 1942 in Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahia, Brazil, Veloso grew up in a family of musicians where he was surrounded by music from an early age.

In the 1960s, Veloso began his career in the arts as a member of the Tropicalia movement, which was a cultural and political movement in Brazil that sought to blend traditional Brazilian music with modern sounds. Along with Gilberto Gil, he formed the group "Os Mutantes" and quickly became known for his socially and politically charged lyrics.

Veloso's artistic talents brought him both fame and controversy. His music was often seen as a form of cultural and political resistance by the Brazilian government, which was then under the control of a military regime. In 1969, Veloso and Gil were arrested and imprisoned for their political activism and were eventually exiled from Brazil in 1972.
