Bertram Luard-Selby was an English composer and organist born on August 18, 1853, and died on December 26, 1918, at the age of 65. He wrote prolifically for the church, the concert hall, and the theatre, and his works include hymns, opera, and incidental music for plays. As an organist, he held a number of important positions, including at St. Mary's Church in Southampton and St. Alban's Cathedral. Luard-Selby is particularly noted for his contributions to church music, and many of his hymns are still sung today, including "Christ is the world's true Light" and "Come down, O Love divine." He also composed instrumental music, such as piano and organ pieces, as well as a number of songs. Overall, Bertram Luard-Selby was an important figure in English music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and continues to be remembered for his contributions to church music in particular.
