Short bio Bernhard Klein
Full biography Bernhard Klein
Bernhard Klein (1793-1832) was a German composer, mainly known for his vocal works. He was born in Cologne and studied music in his hometown, as well as in Frankfurt and Vienna. Klein's early compositions were mainly instrumental pieces, but he later shifted his focus to vocal music, including lieder, or art songs, and choral works.
Klein was a friend and correspondent of the poet Wilhelm Müller, who wrote the texts for Franz Schubert's famous song cycles "Die schöne Müllerin" and "Winterreise". In fact, Klein set several of Müller's poems to music himself. He was also acquainted with other prominent German composers of his time, such as Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann.
Although Klein's output as a composer was small, his music was well-regarded by his contemporaries. His works were performed in major German cities, including Berlin and Frankfurt, during his lifetime. After his death, however, his music fell into obscurity and remained largely forgotten until the 20th century.
Today, there is renewed interest in Klein's music, and a few recordings of his works have been released. His contributions to the Lied genre and his friendship with Wilhelm Müller continue to be of interest to those interested in 19th century German music and literature.
