He was born on January 29, 1928, in Stockholm, Sweden and passed away on September 21, 2000, in Apple Hill, Ontario, Canada. Hambraeus was a prolific composer who wrote music for a variety of instruments, including the organ, choir, and orchestra.
Hambraeus studied music at the Uppsala University in Sweden and later at McGill University in Canada. He became the first Swedish composer to write an electro-acoustic score called "Doppelrohr II" in 1955. He wrote many works for the organ, including his "Constellations II" (1959), which is considered a classic in the genre.
Hambraeus was also a respected musicologist and taught at McGill University from 1967 until his retirement in 1993. He was the author of several books on music history and theory. Additionally, he was an accomplished organist, having played the instrument in many notable venues around the world.
