Full biography Basil Harwood
Basil Harwood (1859-1949) was an English composer and organist. He is best known for his choral and organ works, and his hymn tunes, several of which became quite popular. Harwood was born in Woodhouse, Gloucestershire and was the second youngest among his six siblings. His father was a clergyman and encouraged his children to pursue their interests in music. Harwood studied music at Oxford and later became a professor at the Royal College of Music in London. Among his notable works are his cantatas, anthems, and organ pieces.
Harwood was prolific in his composition and wrote a number of hymns that are still sung today. His hymn "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" is often performed to the tune "Repton," which he composed. Harwood also wrote numerous other hymn tunes, which can be found in various hymnals.
In addition to his work as a composer, Harwood was also a well-respected organist. He held positions at several churches in England, including St. Barnabas in Pimlico, London, and Christ Church in Oxford. Harwood was known for his expressive and musical performances on the organ, which were highly esteemed by his contemporaries.
