Short bio Bartlomiej Pękiel
Full biography Bartlomiej Pękiel
Bartłomiej Pękiel was a Polish composer from the Baroque era, born around 1633 in Krakow, Poland. He is known for his contributions to sacred music, particularly his compositions for choirs and vocal ensembles.
Pękiel's most famous works are his compositions for the Cappella Gedanensis in Gdansk, where he served as the choir's Kapellmeister for almost 30 years. During his time with the choir, Pękiel wrote numerous pieces of sacred music, including hymns, motets, and masses.
The composer's style was marked by a unique harmonization, which combined elements of early Baroque music, such as polychoral textures and antiphonal exchanges, with more expressive harmonies found in the later Baroque period. His works often featured complex polyphony, characterized by the use of multiple voices to create intricate and harmonious melodies.
In addition to his work as a composer, Pękiel was also known for his skill as an organist. His abilities on the instrument often led him to perform works by other composers as well, including those of Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel.
Despite his contributions to the genre of sacred music, Pękiel's legacy has been somewhat overshadowed by that of other Baroque composers such as Bach and Handel. However, his unique style and contributions to the development of sacred music in Poland make Pękiel a significant figure in the history of music.
