He served as the Director of Music at Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, England, for more than three decades, and during his tenure, he earned a reputation as one of the most prominent organists in the UK.

Wills's compositions were heavily influenced by the works of J.S. Bach, and he wrote primarily for the church. His catalog includes numerous anthems, hymn tunes, and psalm chants, as well as several large-scale choral and organ works, such as his "Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis," which is regarded as one of his most significant compositions, and his organ concerto.
