He served as the Director of Music at Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, England, for more than three decades, and during his tenure, he earned a reputation as one of the most prominent organists in the UK.
Wills's compositions were heavily influenced by the works of J.S. Bach, and he wrote primarily for the church.
