Full biography Arthur Lourie
Arthur Louri, also known as Arthur-Vincent Louri, was a Russian composer, writer, administrator, and musical agent. Born Naum Izrailevich Luria , he played a significant role in the early stages of the organization of Soviet music after the Russian Revolution of 1917. He was known for his modernist and experimental style, and his music was influenced by Gregorian chant and his Jewish heritage.
Louri was born into a Jewish family in Propoysk (now Slawharad , Belarus) in 1891. He studied music at the Moscow Conservatory, where he was a student of Nikolai Miaskovsky. In addition to his work as a composer, Louri was also active as a writer and administrator, serving as the director of the Leningrad Philharmonic from 1926 to 1928.
In 1941, Louri fled to the United States with the help of Serge Koussevitzky after the Germans occupied France, where he had been living. Louri continued to compose after emigrating to the United States, but struggled to gain recognition for his work. He attempted to write music for film but was not successful, and he largely fell into obscurity in his later years.
Despite his relative lack of recognition in the United States, Louri's music has been gaining renewed attention in recent years. Musicians and scholars have been rediscovering his works and recognizing his contributions to modernist music. Today, Louri is regarded as one of the most important composers of his time, and his music continues to be performed and studied by students and musicians around the world.
