Short bio Arthur Foote
Full biography Arthur Foote
Arthur Foote (1853-1937) was an American classical composer and one of the leading members of a group of composers known as the "Boston Six". He was born in Salem , Massachusetts and grew up in Boston. Foote was the first noted American classical composer to be trained entirely in the U.S., which was a rarity for his time - many American composers at the time learned their craft in Europe.
Foote was highly regarded as a composer , teacher, and writer. He graduated from Harvard University and later studied music at the New England Conservatory of Music. He went on to become a prominent church musician and taught at the conservatory, where he influenced many young composers, including George Whitefield Chadwick and Horatio Parker.
Foote's compositions encompass a variety of genres, including orchestral music, chamber music, and choral works. Some of his most famous works include his Suite for Strings in E Major, Op. 63, and his Three Character Pieces for Violin & Piano, Op. 9. Foote was also an accomplished poet and wrote the text for many of his own choral works.
Despite his talent and influence, Foote is not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, such as Edward MacDowell and John Philip Sousa. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in Foote's music, with many music scholars and performers rediscovering his works and championing his legacy.
Overall, Arthur Foote was a highly talented American composer and influential teacher who played an important role in the development of classical music in the United States.
