Full biography Arthur De Greef
Arthur De Greef (1862-1940) was a Belgian composer and pianist. He studied at the Brussels conservatory and later in Paris with César Franck and Camille Saint-Saëns. De Greef was a prolific performer and made numerous recordings, some of which are still available today. He was known for his interpretations of the works of Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy, and Gabriel Fauré, and was instrumental in promoting French music in Belgium.
As his reputation grew, many composers began to write for him , including Paul Hindemith, Edvard Grieg, and Maurice Ravel. De Greef himself was also a prolific composer, and wrote a number of works for the piano as well as songs, chamber music, and orchestral pieces.
De Greef's style is often described as post-romantic, and his music reflects the influence of composers such as Liszt and Franck. He was known for his technical virtuosity and his ability to convey emotion through his playing and his compositions.
In addition to his career as a performer and composer, De Greef was also a respected teacher. Among his students were the Australian pianist William G. James, who studied with him in Brussels and later became a pioneer of music broadcasting in Australia.
Although De Greef's music is not as well-known today as it was during his lifetime , his legacy as a performer, composer, and teacher continues to be celebrated.
