Full biography Arthur Berger
Arthur Victor Berger (May 15 ), 1912 - October 7, 2003) was an American composer, critic, and teacher. He is known for his contributions to the creation of an American style of classical music. Berger wrote music for a wide range of ensembles, including symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, and was particularly interested in twelve-tone composition.
Berger studied at New York University and Harvard University, where he later taught for many years. He was a prolific writer, publishing numerous articles and books on music, including critical and analytical pieces on composers such as Igor Stravinsky, Charles Ives, and Aaron Copland.
As a composer, Berger was often associated with the New Mannerist movement, which emphasized individual expression and experimentation in music. His compositions were known for their intricate textures and use of serialism.
Berger also had a distinguished career as a teacher and mentor to many notable composers, including Elliott Carter and Milton Babbitt. He taught at a number of institutions, including Columbia University, the New England Conservatory, and Brandeis University.
Despite his many accomplishments, Berger was known for his modesty and dedication to his art. He once said, "I write music because I have to. It’s as simple as that."
Arthur Berger passed away on October 7, 2003, leaving behind a legacy as an important figure in American music and culture.
