Antonio Smareglia (1854-1929) was an Italian composer best known for his work in the field of opera. He was born in the town of Pula, in the Istrian peninsula, which at the time was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Smareglia's musical education began early, and he received formal training in Italy and Germany. In addition to his work as a composer, Smareglia was also a music teacher, and he was known for his mentorship of blind musician and composer Francesco Santoliquido.

Smareglia's work as a composer was diverse, and he wrote pieces in a variety of genres, including symphonies, chamber music, and vocal works. However, he is best known for his operas, which were praised for their originality and dramatic power. Smareglia's early operas were influenced by the work of Richard Wagner, with whom he studied in Bayreuth. Later, his style evolved, and he began to incorporate elements of Italian and Slavic music into his compositions.

Despite his talent and success, Smareglia's reputation as a composer suffered after his death, and his work was largely forgotten. In recent years, however, there has been a renewed interest in his music, and efforts have been made to reintroduce his work to modern audiences. Today, Smareglia is recognized as an important figure in the development of Italian opera, and his contributions to the field continue to be celebrated.
