Antonio Sartorio (1630-1680) was an Italian composer who was active mainly in Venice, Italy, and in Hanover, Germany during the Baroque era. He was a leading composer of operas, oratorios, and cantatas in his time.
Sartorio began his musical career as a singer at the Basilica dei Frari in Venice. He later worked as a composer at the Court of Hanover, where he was employed as Kapellmeister, or music director. It was during this time that he composed some of his most famous works, including several operas such as "Orfeo", which is based on the myth of Orpheus, and "Giulio Cesare in Egitto" (Julius Caesar in Egypt).
Sartorio was known for his natural and expressive melodies, as well as his use of innovative harmonic and instrumental techniques. His music is characterized by a lyrical and melodic style, with an emphasis on vocal expression.
Sartorio's music was highly regarded by his contemporaries, and he was one of the most celebrated composers of his time. Despite his success during his lifetime, his music fell into obscurity after his death, and it was not until the mid-20th century that his works began to be rediscovered and appreciated once again.
