Antonio Cesti, also known as Pietro Marc'Antonio Cesti, was an Italian composer of the Baroque era. He was born on August 5, 1623, in Arezzo, Tuscany, and was baptized on that same day. Cesti was renowned for his contribution to the development of Italian opera. He was one of the leading Italian composers during the Baroque era , along with the likes of Francesco Cavalli, Luigi Rossi, and Claudio Monteverdi.
Cesti began his musical career as a singer and organist. He later became a Franciscan friar and continued to compose music. Cesti wrote a large number of operas, oratorios, cantatas and church music, among other genres. His work was known for its lyricism, inventiveness, and emotional expressivity.
At a young age, Cesti moved to Florence, where he studied under the guidance of Antonio Cifra and Antonio Maria Abbatini. Later, he moved to Venice and then Rome, where he worked in various prestigious musical institutions such as the Villa Medici. Cesti was also a part of the Habsburg court of Vienna, where he composed a significant amount of music for the Emperor Leopold I.
Cesti's most famous work is the opera "Orontea," which remained in the repertoire for over 30 years. He also wrote a large number of secular cantatas, motets, and works for orchestra, which demonstrate his mastery of Baroque forms. It is worth noting that Cesti was not only a composer but also a poet. He wrote the libretti for a significant number of his own operas
