Short bio Antoine Brumel
Full biography Antoine Brumel
Antoine Brumel was a French composer who lived during the Renaissance period, approximately from 1460-1520. He was one of the first composers to write music for more than four voices, and his works were noted for their complexity and textured polyphony.
Brumel was born near Nogent-le-Rotrou in France, though the exact location is uncertain. He likely lived and worked in various parts of France, and some sources suggest that he may have even traveled to Italy at some point.
Brumel was known for his sacred vocal music, including masses, motets, and chansons. One of his most famous works is the Missa Et ecce terrae motus , which is also known as the Earthquake Mass due to its use of low bass notes that mimic the sound of an earthquake. Other notable works of his include the Missa l'homme armé and the Missa Berzerette savoyenne.
Although Brumel was not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, such as Josquin des Prez, he was highly regarded by his peers and his music was widely performed during his lifetime. Today, his works are still studied and performed, and he is recognized as an important figure in the development of Renaissance music.
