Andrei Yakovlevich Eshpai was a Soviet and Russian composer born on May 15, 1925, in Moscow, Russia. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory with some of the finest composers of his time, including Nikolai Rakov and Dmitri Shostakovich, and later became a teacher and professor at the same institution.

Eshpai was known for his unique style, which blended elements of folk music with modern classical techniques. He composed works for a wide range of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo instruments, and his music was performed widely both in the Soviet Union and abroad.

Some of Eshpai's most famous works include his Piano Sonata No. 2, his Symphony No. 3, and his String Quartet No. 4, which incorporated elements of Mari folk music. He was also a prolific composer of film scores, and wrote music for more than 50 films during his long and illustrious career.

In addition to his work as a composer, Eshpai was also an accomplished pianist and actor, and appeared in a number of films and television shows throughout his lifetime. He received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to music, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR, and was highly regarded by his peers and students alike.
