He comes from a family of musicians: his father Herman David Koppel was a composer and pianist, while his brother Thomas Koppel was a composer and musician as well. Anders Koppel started his career by writing songs together with his brother in the early 1960s.

Over the years, Koppel has become known for his diverse musical output, which includes works for orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. He has also written music for films and television. One of his most famous works is the opera "Macbeth", which he composed in 1980.
