He comes from a family of musicians: his father Herman David Koppel was a composer and pianist, while his brother Thomas Koppel was a composer and musician as well. Anders Koppel started his career by writing songs together with his brother in the early 1960s.

Over the years, Koppel has become known for his diverse musical output, which includes works for orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. He has also written music for films and television. One of his most famous works is the opera "Macbeth", which he composed in 1980.

Koppel's music often blends different genres and styles, and reflects his interest in world music. He has collaborated with musicians from various cultures, including African and Middle Eastern musicians. Koppel's mulitcultural approach to music can be heard in his recent album "Mulberry Street Symphony", which features elements of jazz, classical music, and various folk traditions.
