Short bio Alonso Lobo
Full biography Alonso Lobo
Alonso Lobo (February 25 , 1555 - April 5, 1617) was a highly regarded Spanish composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Born in the town of Osuna in southern Spain, Lobo began his musical education as a choirboy in Seville Cathedral, where he studied under the prominent composer Francisco Guerrero. He later went on to hold various musical positions in several Spanish cathedrals, including in Seville, Toledo, and Toledo.
Lobo is known for his contributions to polychoral music, a style that involves the use of multiple choirs and is characterized by intricate interweaving melodies and harmonies. His music often features rich and expressive textures, with a particular emphasis on vocal polyphony. Some of his most famous works include "Versa est in luctum" and "Lamentations of Jeremiah".
Although Lobo was highly regarded during his lifetime and in the centuries that followed, his music fell out of favor for several hundred years, until it was rediscovered in the 20th century. Today, Lobo's works are widely performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world, particularly in the context of early music and historically informed performances.
