Short bio Alois Haba
Full biography Alois Haba
Alois Haba was a Czech composer, music theorist, and innovator who is known for his experiments with microtonal music and quarter-tone scales. He was born on June 21, 1893, in Vizovice, Moravia and died on November 18, 1973, in Prague. Haba studied with the Czech composer Václav Novák and later with the Austrian composer Franz Schreker in Vienna.
One of Haba's significant contributions to music is his creation of a set of accidentals for quarter-tone music. He wrote his first quarter-tone piece , Suite, in 1919, and continued to explore this new system of scales throughout his career. Haba's music was a striking departure from traditional Western tonality and often featured unconventional instruments such as quarter-tone pianos and harmoniums.
In addition to his work as a composer, Haba was an important teacher and writer. He published several books on music theory and composition, including his influential treatise, "Neue Harmonielehre des diatonischen, chromatischen, und enharmonischen Tonsystems" (New Theory of Harmony of the Diatonic, Chromatic, and Enharmonic Tone Systems).
Haba's music received renewed attention in recent years, and some of his works are now being performed and recorded by contemporary composers and musicians. He remains a significant figure in the history of microtonal music and an inspiration to experimental musicians and composers today.
