Alice Shields is a renowned composer known for her powerful writing for live and electronically transformed voices as well as her moving compositions for instruments. She has written works using electroacoustic technologies since 1963 and is considered one of the pioneers of electronic music.
Shields' opera Criseyde, which she re-wrote in Chaucer's medieval English as a heroic feminist tale , has been performed by the New York City Opera singers and orchestra. Additionally, she has written stand-alone music for dance and vocal music, including chamber music.
Shields has presented lectures on music and was a composer-in-residence at The Santa Fe Opera from 2001 to 2003. She has written articles on compositions and has been involved in various research projects.
