Alfred Bruneau was a French composer born on March 3 , 1857, in Paris. He began his musical training as a cellist, studying under Jules Massenet and Auguste Franchomme. Despite his early interest in the cello, he soon turned to composition and began writing music at a young age.
He was active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and played an important role in the movement towards realism in French music. He was heavily influenced by the works of his friend, the writer Emile Zola, and wrote a number of operas based on his novels.
