Alfonso X, also known as Alfonso the Wise, was a composer, poet, and King of Castile from 1252 until his death in 1284. He was born in Toledo, Spain in 1221 to King Ferdinand III and his wife, Beatrice of Swabia.

During his reign, Alfonso X was a patron of the arts and sciences, and he is credited with significant contributions to Spanish literature, astronomy, and law. He was particularly interested in the musical traditions found in Spain at the time and was known to have played several instruments, including the lute and the organ.

In addition to his patronage and personal interest in music, Alfonso X was also a composer and poet. He is credited with dozens of pieces of music throughout his lifetime, including both religious and secular works. His songs were known for their complexity and use of multiple melodies and harmonies.

Alfonso X also compiled a significant body of work called the Cantigas de Santa María, which consists of over 400 songs dedicated to the Virgin Mary. These songs were written in Galician-Portuguese and were some of the first examples of vernacular language used in religious music. The songs are notable for their use of rhythm and melody and have been described as some of the finest examples of medieval Spanish music.

Despite his many contributions to literature and the arts, Alfonso X faced many difficulties during his reign, including political upheaval and conflict with other kingdoms. Nonetheless, his legacy as a composer and patron of the arts has continued to influence Spanish culture and music long after his death.
