Short bio Alexis de Castillon
Full biography Alexis de Castillon
Alexis de Castillon was a French composer born in 1838 in Le Havre, France. He was a descendant of a French noble family and began his music education at a young age, studying under François Bazin and Antoine François Marmontel.
Despite his aristocratic background, de Castillon spent much of his life in poverty. He composed many pieces for piano, as well as chamber music and orchestral works, but struggled to have his music recognized during his lifetime.
However, his music was praised by fellow composers such as Gabriel Fauré and César Franck, who spoke highly of de Castillon's creativity and unique style. De Castillon was deeply influenced by the music of Richard Wagner, and his compositions often display a similar grandeur and richness of harmony.
One of de Castillon's most significant works is his Symphony in D major, a grand, five-movement work that was premiered in Paris in 1878. The symphony is a testament to de Castillon's talent and ambition as a composer, showcasing his ability to create intricate and elaborate musical textures.
Despite his lack of recognition during his lifetime, de Castillon’s music has gained more attention in recent years thanks to efforts to promote lesser-known composers and recordings of his music have been released. Today, de Castillon is recognized as a significant figure in late 19th-century French music and an essential composer of his time.
