Short bio Alexander Dargomyzhsky
Full biography Alexander Dargomyzhsky
Alexander Sergeyevich Dargomyzhsky was a Russian composer of the Romantic era. He was born on February 14, 1813, in St. Petersburg, Russia, and died on May 17, 1869, in the same city. He was known for his songs and operas, although his works are not as well-known today as those of some of his contemporaries.
Dargomyzhsky was the son of a government official, and he received a rigorous education in both music and the liberal arts. His mother was a poet, and she wrote poems for her children that were mainly edifying. He was also exposed to the works of Russian and European writers, which influenced his own writing style as a composer.
Dargomyzhsky's early works were mainly songs, which showed signs of his talent for melody and harmony. His most famous opera is "The Stone Guest," which is based on a scene from Alexander Pushkin's play "The Stone Guest." According to the composer's wishes, the last few lines of tableau 1 were left unfinished ), to be sung by the performer as an improvisation.
Dargomyzhsky also composed "Rusalka," which is known for its experimental use of vocal writing to mimic speech, and for its free-flowing structure that is more reminiscent of a symphonic tone poem than a traditional opera. He was also one of the five composers who made up the "The Mighty Handful," a group of Russian composers who sought to create a distinctly Russian style of classical music.
Although Dargomyzhsky's works are not as well-known or frequently performed today, they were highly praised by critics during his lifetime. He is considered to be an important figure in the development of Russian classical music, and his works continue to be studied and performed by musicians and scholars alike.
