Short bio Alberic Magnard
Full biography Alberic Magnard
Alberic Magnard was a French composer born on June 9, 1865, in Paris, France. He was known for his unique musical style, which combined elements of French romanticism, impressionism, and Germanic influence. Magnard studied at the Schola Cantorum in Paris under Vincent d'Indy and became a friend of the painter and writer Maurice Denis. He also had a keen interest in literature and was heavily influenced by the works of authors such as Victor Hugo and Arthur Rimbaud.
Magnard's music was characterized by its rich harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and passionate expression. He was particularly known for his orchestral writing, which was highly virtuosic and imaginative. Magnard wrote four symphonies, several chamber music pieces, and two operas, among other works.
Despite his talent and the critical acclaim he received during his lifetime, Magnard's career was cut short by his tragic death at the hands of the German army during World War I. In 1914, German soldiers had occupied Magnard's family estate, and when Magnard confronted them to protect his property, they shot and killed him. Magnard's music remained largely forgotten for many years after his death until a revival of interest in the mid-20th century. Today, he is recognized as one of the leading French composers of his time and is respected for his originality and his contribution to the development of French classical music.
