Alan Shulman (1915-2002) was an American composer , cellist, and arranger. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and showed an early talent in music. He studied composition with Roy Harris and later with Aaron Copland.
Shulman wrote a significant amount of symphonic, chamber, and jazz music throughout his career. He is well-known for his film scores, which he composed for RKO Pictures in the 1940s. Some of his notable film scores include The Suspect (1944), Strange Impersonation (1946), and Boomerang (1947).
Apart from film scores, Shulman composed a sizeable amount of works for orchestras, such as his Symphony for Classical Orchestra (1951) and Suite for Cello and Orchestra (1959). He also wrote chamber music works, such as his Rendezvous for Clarinet and String Quartet (1961) and Theme and Variations for Viola and Piano (1975).
In addition to his impressive composing career, Shulman was also a renowned cellist and arranger. He is known for his collaborations with jazz legends like Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw.
