Gutmann was a member of Chopin's intimate circle of students and acquaintances. His strength as a pianist was such that he could knock a hole in the keyboard with his thumb. Chopin dedicated his Scherzo No. 3 composition to Gutmann, and Gutmann wrote salon music that enjoyed widespread popularity. Furthermore, his music was fashionable and was similar in style to that of Chopin and his pupils. Gutmann's compositions are mostly romantic in style, and he is known for his works, such as the Mazurka in F Major and the Sonata for Piano and Violin in A minor.
